CIVIL WAR LIGHT ARTILLERY SABRE
MODEL 1840

In 1840 the War Department adopted a special saber based on a French pattern for the light artillery.  It remained regulation for  several decades.  It has a rudimentary false edge and a broad fuller.  This specimen has no markings except for the initials "JT" stamped on the ricasso.  The scabbard is iron and in good condition and fits nice and tight.  The brass knuckle-bow and grip are tight.  Grip is missing the brass wire and a piece of the leather wrap.  The blade has some nicks.  Sword is 38 inches overall, blade is 32" X 1 1/4" wide at the hilt.  $895.00
